Derek Brockway has had a keen interest in the weather since the tender age of eight. Derek joined the Met Office as an observer in September 1986 and became a fully qualified Met Office forecaster in 1995, landing a job at Birmingham Weather Centre presenting on the radio. There followed a move to London where he made his first television appearance – broadcasting on GMTV .
For over eleven years Derek has been main weather presenter for BBC television’s ‘Wales Today’ and BBC Radio Wales, working closely with the BBC news team Jamie Owen and Sara Edwards. He can be seen daily on our television screens and heard on BBC Radio Wales both as a weather presenter and general contributor. Derek broadcasts five days a week at peak viewing times.
Derek has also had his own BBC radio programmes; 'Derek's Lightning Guide to Weather'; two highly successful series called Weatherman Walking’ and has even been a DJ/Presenter on a BBC Radio Wales evening music programme. Whatever he undertakes, Derek is extremely popular with viewers and listeners alike.
Derek received great acclaim for his television series on BBC1 and BBC2 Wales called 'Derek's Welsh Weather'. A testament to his popularity is the large audience he has for this programme which is broadcast opposite Coronation Street at peak viewing time.
Derek has joined Jamie Owen on his summer travels across Wales recording for a new television series for BBC Wales broadcast this year. Without doubt another ‘winner’ for both Derek Brockway and Jamie Owen.
Derek has added yet another string to his bow with the publication of his first book ‘Weatherman Walking’ released in conjunction with his television series. This has proved to be so successful that he was commissioned to write a second ‘Whatever the Weather’, another great success. Another series of Weatherman Walking was shown during the summer. Derek’s new book ‘More Weatherman Walking’ was released in time for Christmas 2008.
Derek is particularly adept at interacting with the public and has a huge following of adoring fans. As a measure of this modest man, Derek still finds it difficult to comprehend the way his popularity has grown beyond recognition over the last few of years.
Derek is in great demand as an after dinner speaker; environmental speaker (he is an experienced Environmental Consultant); host; compere and general celebrity personality. Wherever Derek appears his friendly, natural personality makes him a big hit with the young and old alike.
