Dr Rhys Jones

Dr Rhys Jones is best known for his hit BBC Television series 'Rhys to the Rescue' and his BBC Network programme 'Rhys Jones's Wildlife Patrol' for which Rhys acieved a BAFTA nomination. Dr Rhys Jones has also co-presented the BBC 'The Royal Welsh Show' since 2009, along with other BBC productions including Chris Packhams 'Nature's Calendar', Iolo Williams' 'Iolo's Welsh Safari' and Attenborough's 'Saving Planet Earth'. In October 2014 Rhys recorded his first scientific radio series 'My date with death'.

Dr Rhys Jones holds a BSc in Zoology and Genetics, an MPhil in Medical Molecular Entomology and a PhD in Genetics, Phylogeography, Parasitology and Herpetology. Rhys holds the position of lecturer at Cardiff University where he lectures in various topics including Wolf Ecology, Reptile Mitigation and Cardiff's flagship Animal Diversity module.  Rhys has also lectured annually on the Cardiff University Tropical Ecology Field course in Kenya since 2005.

Rhys's other research interests include Animal behaviour, Ecology and Conservation. Dr Rhys Jones has worked as a Senior Consultant field ecologist since 2002 working with protected species including badgers, barn owls, bats, great crested newts, crayfish, otters, dormice, reptiles (including smooth snakes and sand lizards) and various insect species. A Home Office licensed and trained venomous handler, Rhys supports many professional organisations including South Wales, Dyfed Powys and Gwent Police forces, the British Parachute Regiment, Interpol and Licensing Enforcement, along with many charities in conserving and rescuing endangered, exotic and domestic animals.

Dr Rhys Jones was written off in school as 'will only ever be fit to fill shelves'. Rhys is severely dyslexic but this was not discovered at the time.  He is an amazing inspiration to others with this and other learning disabilities.
